My outfit of the day is featuring HalfUnited's The Jude in gold and mint.  This fighting hunger fashionista is boasting current trends and transforming lives simultaneously.  How can you become the fashionable solution to world hunger?  It's simple.  Buy a necklace!  This great company invests half of its profits into the wellbeing of those less fortunate around the world when you purchase one of their designs.

Whenever I wear this necklace, the following lyrics from Brooke Fraser's song Flags comes to mind:
"You who mourn will be comforted
You who hunger will hunger no more
All the last shall be first
Of this I am sure"

My hope is that this will be the reality of our world someday soon, that no tear will fall and that starvation will be a distant memory.  I chose to follow the wise advice of Mother Teresa: "If you can't feed a hundred people, feed just one."  I wear my HalfUnited necklace with immense joy and honor for the hungry people I've fed and the lives I've transformed.

These must-have ankle boots and my spike gold bracelet are each from Forever 21. This darling purse is by French Connection and this adorable top is by Ya, both from Island Passage. This caramel colored skater skirt is a score from Ann Taylor Loft, and I adore its quality and versatility!

My other necklace with its vintage, feminine touch is also from Island Passage.

As we've learned from Tuesday Huesday: Think Pink for Fall/Winter 2013/2014, powder pink is the hue to fall into this season and the inspiration for my outfit of the day. Here I'm spotlighting a lovely powder pink blouse by French Connection that acts as the perfect blank canvas for my Missoni-esque, chevron scarf (from Anthropologie) and eclectic necklace (made by yours truly and available for purchase here). I simply throw on a pair of dark denim tucked into these gold hardware adorned ankle boots (from Return Passage) before hitting the street. Don't just stop and smell the roses; wear them! ;)

Here's a happy close-up of my powder pink French Connection blouse, chevron Anthropologie scarf and this homemade, one-of-a-kind necklace available on my Etsy shop. Are you thinking pink this Fall?

Remember, whether you're into wearing your roses "and regardless of what else you put on, wear love. It's your basic, all-purpose garment. Never be without it." (Colossians 3:14) xx

For my outfit of the day, I'm channeling inspiration from last week's *Tuesday Huesday: Get in with the Purple Trend*.  I'm wearing layers of lavender and plum with my boyfriend jeans and cut-out platforms.  My handmade gold necklace with its violet stone (see more of my designs here) completes the poshness of this ensemble.  This is a simple yet fashion forward Fall outfit that you can effortlessly recreate any day. All you need to achieve this posh in purple look is the following recipe: a top with the purple hue of your choice, a chic scarf in a deeper tone to reinforce this trendy color, a cozy pair of boyfriend jeans and sassy cut-out heels.

Are you feeling prepared to boast the posh in purple look this Fall? xx

Fall is here and there's no turning back now, but for those of you who still want to hold onto the nostalgia of summer, I'm featuring how to make your summer shorts transition into Fall. So, how do we outfit those summer shorts for the cooler Fall days? The key is tights! A nice pair of tights will ground them with your cozy, chunky sweaters and velvet tops. Here I've taken a precious pair of black shorts sprinkled with gold studs (that I purchased from Hallelu) and incorporated a pair of black tights along with over-the-knee boots (from Island Passage) to further reinforce this outfit's Fall-friendliness. You may want to follow suit by throwing on a pair of boots for added warmth. Thigh-high boots, ankle boots or flats - it's all up to you! I chose the dark tights and boots to complement the loud print of my jacquard jacket (from H&M) and the heaviness of my necklace (from Aqua Fedora). Scroll below for more on this outfit of the day (from yesterday - oops!) and my morning routine.

When getting dressed in the morning, I practice the following passage:
"You are the product of God's love; he restored you to his original thought. You belong to him exclusively. It is like changing garments. Now that you have gotten rid of the old, clothe yourselves with inner compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Wear love like a uniform; that is what completes the picture of our oneness." ~ Colossians 3:12,14 (Mirror Bible)
Imagine yourself each morning being clothed in love as you layer on your outfit. Love is the revelation of who you are just like your outfit of the day is! I highly recommend adopting this morning routine. It's such a positive and empowering way to start your day.

Here are a few more ideas on how to style your Summer shorts for Fall...

Are you feeling inspired to transition your shorts from Summer to Fall with the help of a pair of tights and to wear love daily as your uniform? I hope so! Happy Saturday, everyone! xx

Happy Hump Day, everyone! Velvet is the hot topic of my outfit of the day, and I have a crush on this season's most popular textile! Velvet is taking center stage in the fashion industry as well as in home interiors because it appeals to both the eye and the touch, two highly valuable senses on which both industries thrive. This luxurious fabric yields its garment or furniture piece to both drama and reflection, saturated color and immense light. You'll find velvet occurring naturally on the growing antlers of deer (if you have an interest in nature or deer hunting). Fashion and interior designers have mimicked this texture onto clothing and furniture for its soft and enticing texture. Scroll below to catch a few silhouettes of velvet emerging in the worlds of fashion and interiors.

For my outfit of the day, I'm wearing a Free People dress decorated with damask-etched velvet in warm, Fall hues (this dress I purchased last year from the wonderful Island Passage). My incredible ankle boots (from Return Passage) and my dazzling necklace (from The Culture of Design) reinforce the lushness of this velvet dress (P.S. I ended up adding leggings to this outfit of the day for more coverage in these cooler Autumn temperatures).

Happy Tuesday Huesday, everyone!

Designers are adding a bit of glimmer to your glamour with the magic of metallics this Fall/Winter 2013/2014. Embrace the sheen of the fashion scene with head-to-toe metallics or incorporate just a hint of it with a simple belt. Balmain, Milly, Jenni Kayne and Anna Sui are a handful of the designers featuring Tuesday's Huesday. Transforming the classic top or skirt into a mesmerizing must-have with the pleasant sheen of bronze, silver and gold, this is the magic of metallics. Something so predictable becomes refreshingly and surprisingly new! Thank you for stopping by to catch the metallic highlights from the runway shows of this Fall/Winter 2013/2014. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 10, 2013

Happy Thursday, everyone! My outfit of the day, more accurately my outfit of yesterday (oops!), comprises an oatmeal colored vest and damask printed jeans (both from Island Passage). This layered look topped off with gold hardware clad ankle boots (from Return Passage) is ideal for Autumn's cooler temperatures that linger from night into day. With recent days feeling damp and cool, I've been drinking in the tunes of Norah Jones and enjoying Rooibos Chai Tea with steamed almond milk from Luna Caff e («check them out here). Take a walk with me in my fashionably vested outfit of the day through the fallen, crimson leaves by clicking here!

Mary Poppins, anyone? ;)
This constant drizzle cannot and will not dampen my style! I encourage you to get creative no matter what the weather is like outside. Let your sunny personality set the climate for your attire.    :)

This necklace that I'm wearing (and loving!) is one of my most recent creations and is now up on my Etsy shop!

Here's a clearer shot of my damask printed Blank jeans from Island Passage. This is one of my favorite pairs - so chic and cozy!

Have you pulled out the layers yet, or are you still battling Summer's warmer temperatures? xx

MONDAY, OCTOBER 7, 2013

What's black and white and textured all over? My outfit of the day! Here I'm plowing through Monday in my favorite skater skirt with my mildly cropped damask halter top and texture-clad jacket. My accessories include a ravishing gold and silver necklace with geometric adornments (available here) along with my above-the-knee black leather boots. If you're anywhere near my hometown, you know that it's obviously too warm to be wearing this, but I'm stubbornly wearing this on principle! It's October which means it SHOULD feel like Fall. Hmph!

Thankfully, this outfit still works beautifully in these warm temperatures when I simply remove my jacket. If you're meandering through trying to find a few more outfit inspirations as to how to maximize the use of your skater skirt, click here and here!

I hope you enjoy this blog post. Thanks for stopping by, and have a happy Monday! xx

This gold and silver geometric necklace with its vintage broach is available at The Culture of Design's Etsy shop here!

This structured jacket with its black and white texture and this black, vegan leather skater skirt are both available at H&M.
The damask decorated halter crop top is a chic and genius design from Target. I'm thrilled to experiment with this piece. From leather to velvet to corduroy, I have great ensemble plans for this one!

These smashing, black leather boots by Dolce Vita are ones I purchased at Bevello and I absolutely adore!
What do you think about this outfit of the day?

I hope you enjoy the rest of your week! Please check back for more outfit ideas, gluten-free recipes and diy projects. xx

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, 2013

Happy Monday! My outfit of the day is business chic, featuring a black peplum dress with spicy orange heels and a classy, vintage necklace available on my Etsy shop (click here to explore my designs). The understated peplum is the right dose of sass to this smart-looking ensemble. Here, I'm hoping to inspire your business wardrobe to fit the bill for the office, but please know that there is so much more to business than dressing the part.

Recently, I've been exploring the whole concept of "business". What is it really? It's just a multitude of relationships. Whether business to business, business to consumer or business to government, it revolves around the connection. It's a professional structure of how I can give to someone something that he or she is needing, a service, a product or an experience. He or she in turn has something that will fulfill my need whatever it may be. For this reason, customer service oriented roles such as PR, HR and marketing are so important. I've seen firsthand as a sales associate and manager that my success has come not from being a pushy sales-driven employee but from being a person who genuinely cares. I am able to communicate value of the product for sale while communicating value to the consumer (when most people don't know how valuable they truly are! It's time for that to change).

I want to encourage you today in your relationships whether in your career or your personal life to demonstrate with your actions the value you hold for your relationships and the worth you have for those individuals or businesses. It might mean a simple coffee date or mani/pedi outing where you intentionally describe your appreciation for that person. Maybe it entails writing your senator a "thank you" letter for serving your state, or it could possibly mean genuinely thanking a sales person for helping you over the years and asking what their dreams are. John Wooden has the recipe for success in all relationships (business to business, business to consumer or business to government) in this simple statement: "consider the rights of others before your own feelings and the feelings of others before your own rights." Ultimately, if you dress the part but don't have the heart, you will only get so far.

Here I am in my black peplum dress with spicy orange heels (mmm, pumpkin spice latte, anyone?). All I need is my iPad with my leopard print Nicole Miller case, and I'm ready to hit the office.

I'm swirling over the cut-out back of this dress. Another flare of fun for this structured business look.

Here's a close-up of my gold bling. I'm rocking a few knuckle rings, a paper airplane ring and a chic necklace featuring a vintage broach and pearls.

I'm putting my best foot forward in these spicy orange Calvin Klein heels which I purchased at Belks.
Are you feeling inspired to dress for success? I hope you have a wonderful week at work whether from the office or the comfort of your own home! xx

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 2013

Every September, the bloggers, forecasters, journalists, trendsetters and retailers of the fashion industry have all eyes on the grand finale of fashion weeks around the world - Paris Fashion Week. Paris is the fashion capital of the world and for good reason. The most progressive, exquisite and unparalleled designs come from this romantic European city. Something so innovative happened this week that has never been previously done in the world of fashion. Designer Rick Owens beautifully shocked the pulse of fashion and concept of beauty with his choice of "models" and presentation. Instead of having models with the standard size and shape, prancing down the runway, he showcased his Spring 2014 RTW collection with shapely minorities, all performing a step dance! All eyes are now on designer Rick Owens for his courage in celebrating racial and body diversity and simultaneously communicating the new concept of beauty. Please read more about it and watch the amazing video (click here for the Huffington Post) of the catwalk at Rick Owens, fashion designer and now reformer at Paris Fashion Week.

Thank you, Rick Owen, for bringing racial and body diversity to the fashion industry and for pursuing inclusion for anyone no matter their color or shape! What do you think of Owen's bold move on the catwalk, foregoing the cookie cutter model for a more realistic and diverse representation of the world's population? Happy Friday! xx

Often debuting in the warmer Spring months, pink is bursting out of the color box into Fall and Winter this season. From powder to rose hues, it's the catwalk color essential for your wardrobe as seen on the runways of Celiné, Chloé and Simone Rocha. Even JCrew and Topshop are offering this feminine shade to budget-friendly fashionistas. I'm thrilled to see this delicate pink tone in fashion and find it quite refreshing against all of the grunge and androgynous looks (both trends of which I'm personally not a fan) that have been popular in recent seasons. Think pink this season as you shop for your next winter coat or holiday sweater. Peruse below to see all that fashion's top designers have in store!

Thrift store meets trend score in my outfit of the day, comprised of lions and leather. Rawr! Nothing says queen of the jungle quite like this black vip-front vest adorned with gold lions. This thrift store wonder (found here) boasts a high neckline (that hints at the orient) and a gold lion zipper clasp. Paired with my new H&M black, vegan leather skater skirt, I crown my fashionable outfit of the day with these magnificent ankle boots recently purchased from Return Passage. The buffalo brown and gold hardware of my fresh ankle boots and my stacked, gold arm candy help ground the outfit while tastefully marrying this outfit's thrifty with trendy.

My outfit of the day packed with lions and leather gracefully marries thrift store with trend score as seen here.

Avoid losing your figure in the full proportions of the skater skirt
by matching it with a slim-fitting top like this vest.

Form-fitting top: check. Vegan leather skater skirt: check. Ankle boots with
gold hardware: check. Now you're one of the big cats in fashion this season!

Here's a close-up of my thrift store vest with its black and gold lion covered fabric and
its gold lion zipper detail (notice the long blonde hair clingy to my vest? Yeah, I planned that. Not.).

This thrift store wonder has a chic surprise at every angle - from lions in the front
to black and gold stripes in the back. Everything is so well done!

Here I'm strutting my ankle boots from Return Passage.

I'm obsessed with the gold hardware on these buffalo brown ankle boots! Aren't you?

You've got to acquire a pair of ankle boots for this Fall/Winter 2013/2014.
It's a fashion essential, and I highly recommend these from Return Passage!
Feeling outfit inspired, or is it just too early? Go ahead and make a run for your Monday morning pumpkin spice latte. You got to have your fuel. Plus, it's a must-have on the second day of Fall. Man, how time flies! Thanksgiving will be here before we know it. Until then, keep checking in at The Culture of Design for adorable outfit ideas and fashion trend reports! xx

Happy first day of Fall, everyone!

Shwew, it's been a BUSY week between hopping showrooms at America's Mart in Atlanta, flexing my visual display muscles by helping decorate a wedding that I also attended and thirdly hosting a lingerie shower. Talk about getting a work out! I finally have a moment to sit down and recap my wonderful week at market.

My friends Becky and Mary Katherine who were buying for MK's store Katherine Beck in Oxford, Mississippi, brought me along for the market experience. I'm so thankful for their including and inviting me to learn so much about what happens behind the scenes between retailers and wholesalers. Also, I loved being in my element as a visual merchandiser, enjoying and taking in all of the highly creative visually displays of the various showrooms like Two's Company and Rifle Paper Co. I've included a few photos here of my favorite showroom displays. Between the permanent and temporary showrooms, I was able to gather a generous jewelry loot for my upcoming designs. Scroll below to catch a glimpse of the beautiful things to come this Fall and Winter at The Culture of Design!

The next two photos are of the incredibly tasteful Two's Company. Gotta love them and their visual displays!

Rifle Paper Co. had a precious European-influenced display with retro personality. Such a great marriage between Euro chic and retro vintage - adorable!

Some of the components I picked up at America's Mart in Atlanta - gold, green and purple among other colors and textures.

Check out my friend's lovely gifts and home boutique Katherine Beck by clicking here, and enjoy this lovely first day of Fall! xx

The skater skirt is a hot trend in the world of fashion that you'll love. It's the skirt equivalent to your faithful pair of jeans. It is undeniably comfortable, sells at affordable prices, goes with a top tucked in or out, and can be as casual or dressy as you'd like. It's stellar paired now with a simple tank and a pair of converse or heels. It also transitions beautifully into Fall with a long-sleeved blouse and cut-out ankle boots. I highly recommend the one I purchased at H&M due to its ideal length (many I've found to be too short for my liking) and its reasonable price of $24.95! Thankfully the skater skirt doesn't require any skateboarding ability, just the perfect poser on point with this season's trend. Check out my outfit of the day below for skater skirt inspiration!

Black, vegan leather skater skirt from H&M with Los York tee, orange
Calvin Klein strappy heels, jacquard-weave jacket and gold accessories available here.
The jacquard-weave jacket, also from H&M, is the quintessential
layering piece for transitioning from Summer to Fall.
This gold necklace with bullet shells and midnight stones is available
on my Etsy shop, and the gold stud earrings will be available soon!
These orange strappy heels by Calvin Klein are the kiss of color this
outfit needs to balance out the black and off-white contrast.
Do you plan on rocking the skater skirt this season? If so, what do you plan on pairing with it?
Happy Thursday! xx

Outfit of the Day: Olive & Oak Gray & Aqua Maxi Dress - Baby Knox's Baby Shower

Last night was a hit at the First Friday Gallery Night in Raleigh, but before I update you on that, I want to share with you my wonderful day celebrating a very special baby boy. Today my mum (fabulously decorated) and some of her creative friends hosted a baby shower for my dear middle school friend Mandy Metzler's little man Knox. This sweet six week old tried to come sooner than expected so we had to push back the shower until after his birth.

Scroll below to see my outfit of the day that perfectly complements Knox's aqua chevron blanket (and no, I didn't plan that) along with my mum's impressive decorations. I'm wearing an Olive & Oak maxi in a favorite color combination of mine - gray and aqua. This maxi is adorable with its halter neckline (a re-emerging trend this season), and it's an instant outfit that I've simply paired with scandals. This is an effortless wardrobe "yes"! Enjoy the incredible woodland themed decorations below, and have a lovely weekend! xx

Outfit of the Day: Rust Off-the-Shoulder Dress with Lace Neckline & High-Low Hemline

This outfit of the day is exquisite with its off-the-shoulder, lace adorned neckline and high-low hemline. The rust and off-white contrast brilliantly reveal the beauty and detail of the lace. If love is in the details, then lace must be its fabric form. I hope you're feeling inspired by my outfit of the day with its exquisite lace, off-the-shoulder neckline and high-low hemline. Happy Labor Day, everyone, and enjoy the beach before Fall hits! xx

Tuesday Huesday: Navy Blue is the New Black for Fall/Winter 2013/2014

Happy Tuesday Huesday! Navy blue is the new black for Fall/Winter 2013/2014!

English Writer John Ruskin could not have been more accurate in saying that the "blue color is everlastingly appointed by the Deity to be a source of delight." This same blue color is taking center stage on the catwalk for Fall/Winter 2013/2014 and looks smashing on everyone! Missoni, Valentino, Jill Sander and Dries Van Noten, to name a handful, are offering the navy blue hue in dress, trench and trouser form. You may want to follow suit as Emma Watson, Jennifer Lawrence and Amanda Seyfried are a few of the celebrities to have first been caught in this dashing dark color. Navy the tone for today's Tuesday Huesday is the new black and a wardrobe must-have for the coming cooler days!

Outfit of the Day: Print and Proper

Today's outfit is featuring a printed pant with warm and cool hues of rust, coffee, white and cobalt blue, topped off with a white, ruffled blouse. The ravishing feather and gold necklace sold here helps unite the colors emanating from the pant's fun print (This necklace is one of my own creations that you'll find on my Etsy shop!). The rust orange, leather handbag by Tano and stilts-like wedges by Chinese Laundry enhance the vibrancy of this print and proper ensemble. Scroll below to see my silly poses! xx

Monday Muse Olivia Palermo is in full bloom on the streets of London in this floral pant. She models how to visually balance this trend by pairing her florals with a neon yellow top. The color pop is a mesmerizing contrast to her rather smart looking navy blazer. Her fashionable outfit continues to pack a punch with her cheetah print heels. Adding another print is a daring move that Olivia Palermo wonderfully ties together with her carmel leather handbag. Feeling fashionably famished? Olivia is blooming with fashion outfit ideas and inspiration. Happy Monday! xx

The September Issue is in stores shouting that Fall's fashion season is upon us so summer isn't endless after all. It's the hard truth, but it doesn't mean we can't hold onto summer a bit longer. Transition into the cooler evenings of late summer by falling into Fur. The style spotlight remains on the trouser this Fall. Simply hold onto those bottoms, throw on a sheer, blousy top and bundle under an exquisite fur vest. Finish off your look with black, ankle strap heels and a sassy clutch. This outfit inspiration is boasting a whole lot of summer with a touch of Fall. Summer isn't over just yet, glossies! We are holding on to Summer as long as we can!

Fall into Fur

Here I've shared a Polyvore collage in which I'm featuring the dashing, black, white and gold fur vest by BCBG Max Azria. Are you ready to fall into fur? xx

Ahhh! I have finally done what I have been hoping to do - I have launched my own Etsy shop! This is real life, folks. The Culture of Design is now on Etsy.com. Click here to see my one-of-a-kind jewelry created by yours truly. The photos featured on my Etsy shop are mesmerizing and of the utmost quality thanks to the highly talented Amanda Mitchell of Amanda Lynne Photography. I'm teeming with gratitude for the outstanding job she has done of capturing the details of each of my necklaces. Pictured below is one of the countless photos she kindly took of my homemade inventory. I will post more necklaces to my Etsy shop and to the blog as the week unfolds so please stay tuned!

For more photos by Amanda Lynne Photography featured on my Etsy shop, click here!

Rummage through this blog post to see my first Etsy listing showcased with this stunning Aryn K. halter dress. Its feminine colors and eclectic print echo the hues of this graceful gold necklace with its bullet shell adornment and intriguing stones in layered proportions.

Now these photos are clearly not the work of Amanda Lynne Photography. Amanda's skill far surpasses my best attempts at photography. One day I'll learn how to capture a quality photo!
Until then...
Ooh la la! At first glance (from the front) this dress is enchanting and regal, but then I turn around... That's when the stunning sass kicks into sight. The back is enticing indeed yet tastefully structured with its symmetrical black lines. The whimsy of the flowing hemline softens the back's blunt column, bringing harmony to the outfit's overall look.

Here's the rest of my bling featured against my Aryn K. find from Bevello. This dress is an ideal outdoor wedding outfit for warm summer days. Trust me. That's exactly what I wore it to!
French Connection nude wedges that I scored at Bevello
With the dazzling print of the dress and its stunning back, a nude wedge is the just-right finishing touch. After all, I'd rather my unique, homemade necklace take center stage in this outfit's big picture.

Tell me. What do you think about my necklace? I would love some encouragement and honest feedback! Just head on over to the store and then let me know by commenting here... Happy Tuesday everyone! xx

Remember this harem pant? Yeah, I'm obsessed so here I go featuring it in another outfit of the day. Feel free to take a look at it's first appearance here. It's graffiti print and high-waisted personality screams "fierce" next to these yummy orange heels by Calvin Klein. Hold on because I don't want to go all out Sasha Fierce on my outfit. In order to balance out the attitude of my outfit's bottom half, I tucked in a black peter pan collar top and threw on a streamlined blazer both by Lauren Conrad.
Here's the outfit of the day echoed!

Here's the whole ensemble: business on top and party on the bottom!

This is what I call the gangster pose with one pant leg unintentionally rolled up. Something fierce!

Here's a closer look at my jewelry that proves opposites attract. The bracelets on my right arm reinforce the fierce theme. The bling on my left arm reels in the chic vibe.
My necklace by yours truly marries the two with its dainty stones and pearls to contrast the edgy bullet shells.
This purse is one of my favorites. French Connection is channeling Chanel with its leather woven body and its black and gold chain strap.
It's my dream to have a vintage Chanel bag like the one pictured above. For now I'll keep dreaming...

Calvin Klein does it again! These orange heels of his are mesmerizingly beautiful that I purchased from Belk. Mr. Klein's most recent designs have captured my fashion attention like never before.
Here's a little reminder that I designed yesterday: "Create a life that feels good on the inside, not one that just looks good on the outside." We must remember that everything including flows from the inner person into the outer world. Though our culture teaches the opposite, I encourage you to cultivate positive thoughts and beliefs from within. When you love yourself and show yourself kindness, then you can share that with the world and the world will recognize it!
A last look of my outfit of the day is shown here. Are you inspired yet to try out the harem pant? I hope so! Happy Wednesday! xx

2013 Trend: The Angled Skirt

This season designers have taken the same old skirt and transformed it with sassy new angles, updating this classic clothing item with a little modern attitude. The first skirt having been made of straw has come a long way from its thousands B.C. origin. Today's 2013 fashion season is featuring the skirt in asymmetrical, mini, folded, wrap and split proportions. I have an angled skirt built of black leather that I purchased from Hallelu at the start of the summer, and I absolutely LOVE it! Hallelu even has a few more styles to offer the fashion saavy in search of the perfect angled skirt. Other retailers like Zara (someone please tell me why we don't have a Zara here? Ugh) are also stocked with this trendy wardrobe essential. Take a look at some of the adorable angled skirts featured below. Do you plan on making the cut? xx

Here I am wearing my black leather angled skirt from Hallelu with my mint buttoned down top from Forever 21 and my Half United necklace. To read more about this outfit of the day, click here!

THURSDAY, JULY 25, 2013

My outfit of the day is featuring the trouser power trend of 2013. Whether palazzo, crossover, harem or cropped, the trouser is taking on fresh shapes and new prints. Get in with this 2013 trend because it's carrying over into Fall with steep heels and boots. Scroll below for more trouser power trend inspiration! xx

Here I'm wearing a black and white graffiti-printed harem trouser from Forever 21. This harem trouser is only $15.80 and on trend - are you kidding me? This is an obvious buy.
By pairing it with this tangerine top by Cynthia Rowley, the trouser takes center stage.
These amazing nude wedges with their rubber soles are extremely comfortable without compromising style. Thank you, French Connection, for your ingenuity, and thank you, Bevello, for carrying them!
This black and gold tassel necklace is a purchase I am so glad that I made last Fall from Aqua Fedora. It's stunning and goes with just about anything.
Here's another pose just for kicks.
The cuff at the ankle of this Pixie Market printed pant featured on Elle is making me go loco! I'm wanting this trouser and trying to find an excuse to buy them. Anybody want to split the price with me? We could share them kind of like the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants but without all the cheesy stories of heartbreak. Time share or trouser share? Just thought I'd throw that out there. ;)
As seen on Harper's Bazaar, Anna Dello Russo (left) is rocking her stark black trouser with large and in charge clogs. Natalia Vodianova (right) takes her trouser to towering heights in heels of a feminine frame. You can make trousers as masculine or feminine as you want so get creative, fashionista!

3.1 Phillip Lim, Rag & Bone and Rebecca Taylor are all featuring the trouser on the catwalk in a skinny military style. Keep it chic with stacked heels and slimming tops for Fall.
Also seen on Harper's Bazaar, model Lily Kwong (left) with her clean white and blogger Elin Klingright (right) with her deep navy are owning this trouser trend. There are so many fun colors and prints to choose from! Feeling inspired?

Okay, I'm feeling a little too inspired. This Rebecca Taylor Bobcat Pant is another fabulous trouser now or into the Fall with some sassy ankle boots. Add this to your back-to-school wishlist. Are you trouser trend ready? xx

Outfit of the Day: Polka Dot Denim Top with Geometric High-low Skirt

Before we begin, I have a confession to make. This geometric high-low skirt was once a maxi skirt, but I absent-mindedly threw it the dryer one day. When I pulled that sucker out, it was two inches shorter! My first thought was "all good things come to an end." But, then a pair of scissors caught my eye and I thought, "Not for this skirt!" Because I'm so attached to it, rather than throw it out, I converted it into a high-low skirt (Thank God for the length-forgiving high-low trend).

With a simple makeover, here is my geometric skirt with its new proportions paired with my comfy and cute polka dot denim top. I simply tied the top at the waist, threw on a pair of gray platforms and layered on the bling for my outfit of the day! I thought my outfit was complete until I saw my Parisian hat with its charming bow staring back at me. Lately I've been terribly missing Paris, the fashion capital of the world and the magical city where I did a summer abroad in college. This hat was the finishing touch that made me feel closer to a city I dearly love. Voila! My outfit of the day is all tied up and put together with a pretty Parisian bow. Happy Monday, everyone! xx

I added a touch of whimsy with this beautiful bow-adorned woven hat from Island Passage.

The has-been maxi is from Anthropologie, one of my favorite eclectic stores. The gray platform shoes are a Dolce Vita look-alike from Forever 21.

The blinging, silver necklace was a bridesmaid's gift from my sister-in-law. She's got great taste! And there's that knuckle ring that I love so much. It's from Wilmington's own Edge of Urge.

Feeling inspired? Now it's your turn to dress to express (yourself)!

Outfit of the Day: Black Leather Angled Skirt with Mint Top

Whoever said leather can't be worn in the summer has been proven wrong this season. Thanks to designers like Marni, Loewe and Proenza Schouler, 2013 is stacked high with warm-weather leather in upbeat tones and fun silhouettes! From bermuda shorts to dresses to tops, the list of leather options goes on. I stumbled upon this amazing leather skirt with its angled hemline at the charming beach boutique Hallelu. I balanced the feel of my outfit by counteracting the edgy look of my black leather skirt with the smart and chic look of this buttoned-down mint top from Forever 21. I hope you are inspired to try the leather trend! Happy Thursday! xx

Just look at how precious the gold tips of this collar are! Just look at it. The gold pops perfectly underneath this gorgeous, hunger-fighting necklace by Half United with its mint and gold layered bullet.
You can never wear too much gold - gold arm candy galore!

These black strappy leather heels from Island Passage reinforce my outfit's warm weather leather look.

Hermes, Salvatore Ferragamo, Chanel and Marni are all offering lush tones of leather in summer silhouettes. The options are endless.

 J. Mendel takes leather to all new proportions with this navy angled skirt.
Fendi proves that leather doesn't have to be dark and stiff by constructing an eye-popping outfit with this season's teal leather romper.
Tibi lightens the seriousness of leather with its swooping hemline top layered over this soft yellow skirt.
Of course Fendi masters the stubborn nature of leather by engineering both a shell and a skirt with flirtatious and flexible shape. Fendi will always be my favorite designer for continuing to offer unparalleled designs with progressive textiles and innovative personality.
Alexander Wang emphasizes his black leather vest by weaving it in with an outfit of white. Again black and white is a major trend that's sticking around as I've mentioned here. Are you into the warm-weather trend?

Extra! Extra! Read all about it! What's gone from vacation favorite to this season's staple? The short.

This cute and cozy summer trend can be traced back to the Spring/Summer 2013 runways of Hermes, Paul & Joe and Fendi. Designers are offering such pretty takes - from solid tones to ethereal prints to playful patterns - on a practical item for these warmer temperatures. My outfit of the day features a pair of shorts adorned with peruvian texture, a tribal but tailored looking top and nude kitten heeled sandals.

Scroll below to take a closer look at my short story and to draw inspiration from some of the finest featured on the runway!

P.S. All you trivia buffs, did you know that "Extra! Extra! Read all about it!" is a phrase traced back to the first newspapers? Newsboys (not the Christian band from the 90s) would shout to draw in passersby when the publisher of the daily paper also came out with an Extra. I like to think of current blogs as the Extras of today. I hope you enjoyed this bit of trivia. Happy reading! xx

Extra! Or, holler!
You'll never guess where I scored these shorts - a random thrift store in Arcadia, California! What a thrift store find! The top is from the incredible and creative JCrew. The shoes are from Island Passage years ago, and I just can't seem to part from them yet.

TUESDAY, JULY 9, 2013

By now you should know that I love mixing prints. In fact, I may be a little obsessed. Because life is what you make it, I choose to add in plenty of fun and interesting even in what I wear. For this reason I create crazy combinations of colors, patterns and prints that surprisingly look smashing! Or, perhaps I think they look great when they actually don't and no one has told me otherwise. Oh dear God, am I like one of those tone-deaf contestants trying out for American Idol? Please tell me I'm not. Please! Well, if I'm as stylish as I hope to be, please peruse below to draw some inspiration from my outfit of the day.

Coral polka dots atop grey and white chevron pants? Of course, and why not? Finish off this chic outfit with accessories galore like a coral handbag to reinforce this on-trend color. I tried something new by layering two statement necklaces, one gold chain with dangling onyx tear drops and one hammered silver chain with sparkling diamondesque stones. I loved the combination so much that I plan on doubling up on statement necklaces more often. Why not give it a try yourself?

What do you think of my layering two statement necklaces?

I'm covered in arm candy, gold and silver. The gold and coral one is from Forever 21. The watch is from The Limited. The all gold bracelet is vintage and a gift from my mum. My sweet family friend Brenda Moore snatched me the grey and gold one from China while visiting her daughter. The coral hair tie is by Kitsch. The silver bracelet was a gift from a family member. The gold knuckle ring which I can't get enough of is from Edge of Urge.

Oh, just sitting pretty with my coral handbag from Island Passage...

I told you I sometimes go slightly mental over mixing prints and patterns...

These Calvin Klein heels from Belk's are going down in the books as one of my favorite pairs. Mr. Klein has beautifully mastered together fashion ingenuity with classic style and comfortability in one shoe. I'm amazed and in love!

If you're loving what I'm wearing, you should know that I purchased the top and pants of this prints charming ensemble from the GAP and the Calvin Klein heels from Hudson Belk's. I hope you're feeling fashion inspired! Happy Tuesday! xx

THURSDAY, JULY 4, 2013

Today since 1776, we have celebrated this day as the birth of American independence! Thanks to Thomas Jefferson and the representatives of the original 13 colonies for kicking off this American tradition with the signing of the Declaration of Independence to guide us as one nation under God.

With our flags raised high in July's warm, summer sky, according to legend we can thank Betsy Ross for the original American flag also created in 1776. Her creation is not only a symbol of our freedom but a timeless inspiration of American fashion. Cities, towns, families all over America will color the sky with fireworks to commemorate the freedom that has been fought by countless brave soldiers. Thank you to all who have given their time and many their lives. I am proud to be an American, and as a proud American, I'm offering you a few Fourth of July fashion outfit ideas. Just scroll below.

Happy Independence Day, everyone!

I'm seeing *Stars* and //Stripes\\ and loving it! Dare to layer the patriotic look as seen below.

2013 Trend: Black and White Striped Pant/Legging

What's black and white and seen all over? This season's black and white striped pant/legging trend. We're seeing it worn by the fashionable Miranda Kerr and Taylor Tomasi Hill. Whether with a business chic flare, a classic, feminine touch or a rocker chick vibe, each woman like you can tailor this fashion essential to her style preference. This trend is one that won't break the bank too thanks to H&M, Mango and Topshop. Browse below to gain some inspiration on how to rock the black and white pant/legging day and night! xx

Miranda Kerr for Mango shows us that the black and white pant paired with a black blouse and white blazer makes for an excellent office uniform. Your co-workers are sure to be inspired and impressed.

Click here for more from this fabulous fashion blogger!

Take this look from office desk to dinner date, by trading in your work friendly shoes with studded stilettos and your black blouse for a sexy tank. Grab an animal print clutch, throw on gold jewelry and vamp up the makeup to achieve that chic evening wow factor.

The above flare trouser offers a more flattering cut for the bottom heavy silhouette. After all, no one should be left out of this black and white pant trend, no matter the body shape.

Anyone not quite brave enough for the black and white striped pant or legging? Try a hybrid like the above outfit. Black in the front and white in the back provide the perfect introduction into this hott 2013 trend. Chic and trendy for the not yet daring.

Here Taylor Tomasi Hill is strutting her striped black and white striped pants with a simple white buttoned down blouse under a dark hued sweater. As the style and accessories director for US Marie Claire Magazine, she is one to watch for the latest trends. Look for her stunning red hair! If this fashion industry icon is wearing it, you know it's a must-have.

These Beetlejuice reminiscent black and white leggings are so fun with this gray crop top, platform lace-ups and black hat. If my abs were that chiseled, I just might rock this outfit. For now, I'll stick with a dark, fluid tank, a bejeweled bib necklace, white high heels and a black leather jacket. How are you wearing your black and white striped pant/legging? xx

THURSDAY, MAY 16, 2013

Chanel said it best that "elegance is when the inside is as beautiful as the outside." Beauty comes from within. Cheesy but so accurate! So often our modern, western society teaches us that the external world determines the internal world, but the opposite is true. The inner world dictates the outer world so each morning when you rummage through your closet, check in with your heart. Never let your wardrobe thrive at the expense of your heart's well-being. Both must be fully alive and gorgeous! Elegance begins within.

Oh, and I'd like to add that elegance does not equal stiff snobbery. Mirriam Webster defines elegance as "tasteful richness of design or ornamentation." Elegance can mean taking classic pieces and making them playful and unpredictable. For those of you who need a little outfit inspiration, scroll below to see my outfit of the day! (P.S. Sorry I haven't posted in quite a while. I've been ministering in paradise also known as New Zealand! Maybe I'll post some photos soon.) xx

This pink nectarine top is the perfect punch of playfulness to compliment my personality
Here I'm posing in front of a dreamy door in downtown Wilmington. Due to my slight obsession with doors, I loved stumbling upon this one. It's the perfect backdrop to my cream Paige Denim printed pant sprinkled with black bicycles. Why just ride your bike, when you can wear it? I finished off my look with black ankle boots, a plunging gold tassel necklace and these on-trend, rounded, cat-eye sunglasses.

"Elegance is when the inside is as beautiful as the outside." -Coco Chanel
This photo is an outtake from my outfit of the day shoot, but I thought it was too hysterical not to share! It looks like I'm working on my two-step. "Step aside, y'all. I'm about to break it down."

I hope you all enjoyed this outfit of the day packed with color, a printed pant and the two-step. Chanel, being one of fashion's greatest icons, is someone whose advice I take seriously; and she said it herself that "elegance is when the inside is as beautiful as the outside." Remember, dressing beautifully is a great hobby, but addressing the heart is necessary to live a life of elegance. xx

Fashion Mixology: One Polka Dot Denim Top - Four Outfits

From stores to streets, polka dotted denim can be seen. Here I'm giving you a few outfit ideas for a polka dot denim top, a must have staple this season. This trendy buttoned down is like a blank canvas. All you need to do is pile on the color and patterns in your accessories. Scroll down to be inspired! xx

Polka dot denim plus floral printed denim (both from JCrew) for the win while sipping on organic apple juice from my favorite Anthropologie mug and enjoying the sunshine.

This yellow-green, ruffled scarf (also from the wonderful Anthropologie) brings out the bright tones in my Mui Mui flats. I snagged these jeweled peep toes from Printemps during their summer sale while living and studying in Paris at the Paris-American Academy. I've been dreaming lately of going back for a visit. Who wants to join me?

I'm hoping this casual chic outfit makes up for my awkward stance here.

These adorable ankle strap flats bring out the poppy peach stripes in my white scarf - a fun splash of color against all the denim!
Throwing on some bright pink wedges with a lace skirt gives the polka dotted denim top a feminine flare. Love it paired with the patterned scarf!
Colored jeans with polka dotted denim is a yes! These bright mint jeans pack a nice punch with these sky high white Calvin Klein heels, reinforced by this vivacious jeweled necklace against the polka dot denim.
A little close-up of the bling that I'm rockin'! I snagged this at Forever 21...couldn't tell, could you? It exudes the style of a JCrew or Banana Republic accessory.
Polka dotted denim has gone from stores to streets in a hot second. Are you into this season's trend? If so, how are you wearing yours?

Feeling inspired? Click here for outfit ideas with a basic blouse and here for a few ensemble combos with a printed pant! xx

Outfit of the Day: Retro Business Chic

Today I had fun taking some shots of my outfit of the day in downtown Wilmington in this beautiful Spring weather. This knit, polka dotted emerald and navy dress is a sassy number with the perfect touch of sophistication. I played up the sassiness with these magenta wedges by Dolce Vita. If you're a little more on the conservative side, feel free to swap out the wedges with a pair of nice navy pointed heels. Throw on a blazer, and you're dressed to impress your boss for your early morning presentation. What to do when it's pouring on the way to work? Scroll below to see how I keep covered and cute when the clouds start pouring. Whether you swing to the prep or pin-up side of the fashion pendulum, a dress like this is perfect for your work wardrobe because it's all about what you add to it! Have fun making the conference room your "catwalk"! xx
Arm party all day everyday!

Bright shoes mean a bright lip with this retro business chic outfit.

A popular color combo this season: magenta (or hot pink), navy and emerald.

Here I am with my favorite rain jacket by Free People over my outfit of the day!

Just because it's raining doesn't mean you can't keep your sunny disposition.
No outfit is complete without a smile! :) Happy work week everyone! xx

"Florals...for Spring? Groundbreaking," so says Miranda, riddled with sarcasm, the editor of Runway on one of my top favorite movies The Devil Wears Prada. It's true that florals are often associated with spring, but this season they consist of lustrous, bright tones such as hot pink, cobalt and emerald. This Spring's color wheel is such a fun pick-me-up in contrast to the dreary, cold days of winter. All the brilliant florals pictured below are making me want sunny beach weather now. Are you vacationing somewhere warm anytime soon? Scroll below for holiday and spring break outfit ideas.

A Kate Spade RTW look for Spring 2013. I'm loving the fresh pink and white flower collar!

Here we have the hot pink, cobalt and emerald that are coloring spring wardrobes everywhere - thanks to Kate Spade & other genius designers!

Here is JCrew's Spring lookbook for womenswear. So many playful hues, prints and shapes.

I'm slightly obsessed with this Spring fashion spread by Marais which I stumbled upon here.

More Marais! I am wanting those adorable floral shorts and sassy peep toe wedges please.

Toss on a printed pant, a floral pink sock and a neutral pointed heel, and you've gone a killer outfit. Fashion recipe again by Marais.
Please click here for the video Spring lookbook by Marais. It's brilliant and so happy - perfect thing to watch or listen to in the morning for fashion inspiration! Happy Spring shopping! xx

Printed pants are all the rage, and I must say that I'm a fanatic! Pair your new printed pant with a fashionable hot pink blouse, a mint buttoned down or another pattern top (all pictured below) to have an instant outfit party. For those of you easing into this trend, start with a basic white or black blouse and add on color through your accessories. An emerald clutch or cobalt dangling necklace will give you a safe dosage of pizzazz for the not yet daring.

Life's too short to wear boring clothes so have fun! xx
The hand pose is a little much, I know. Olan Mills, anyone?

Pink is a huge color this season so why not rock it with a printed pant?

Meet Christian (pictured at the top) and Isaiah. These two fellows were strolling down the street while I was snapping photos, and I just had to get some photos with them. My favorite fashion item is Christian's Carolina Tar Heels hat especially after Carolina's win against Maryland today. Go Heels!

The mint buttoned down top and peachy pink platforms give this outfit such a breezy resortwear look. This would be great for a evening in St. John or on a Caribbean cruise. Now who wants to hook a sistah up?

A little bird's eye view: mint, black & white pattern plus peach!

A bird's eye view of my favorite outfit combination out of them all: cheetah, black & white pattern plus black & camel print!

And here it is...my favorite combo of all! Sassy retro meets preppy glam, yeah? LOVE it.

Double the print means double the party! Always be daring and fun in your outfit choices. Remember that life is just too short to not stand out! xx

I hope you all are enjoying your Valentine's Day! Why is this day so great...? Because you get to be with the ones you love AND you can gorge on just as much candy and chocolate as you want. You get to make charming homemade valentines and decorate them with cheesy, heartfelt sayings like the one pictured below ("You're my butter half")... Ha!

Vintage valentines and flowers are my favorite surprises. Every year since I was a little girl, my parents have given me tulips. I love how they never forget that I love tulips since they are the only flower that continues to grow even after being picked.

Outfit of the Day: Fashion Kaleidoscope

Ladies and gents, here's an outfit that I threw together and love - simply because it's so me! It's amazing how designers create such lovely, progressive articles of clothing. I'm forever grateful for their expertise and ingenuity. My favorite part in the process though is seeing how fashion consumers make each piece unique to them. It's all about how YOU wear it. No one else can wear an outfit like you so have fun layering, mixing and matching. I dare you to take the ordinary and make it extraordinary, to learn from others and make it all your own. Beauty that's unpredictable is oh so appealing. That's why the world needs you to be you even in your wardrobe style. Scroll down to see all the elements that make up this fashion kaleidoscope.

Below you can see my outfit of the day. My black lace shorts from summer are instantly repurposed for winter with a dash of black tights and ankle boots. Remember to think out of the box and make those fashion favorites work for you year round! I then toss on a basic denim button down with a honey and black knit sweater by Mink Pink for added warmth. The peek-aboo of denim brings a flare of casualty to this eye-catching ensemble. I top off this outfit with gold accessories before grabbing the Funnies section. The Funnies always make me smile, and I couldn't agree more with theatre director Martin Charnin (best known for the musical Annie) that "you're never fully dressed without a smile."
Happy Saturday! xx

Fashion Mixology: One Top - Five Outfits

Need some outfit ideas? Look no further! I'm here to help you out.

I don't know about you, but there are some days where I wake up, look in my closet and literally say to myself, "I have nothing to wear!"

This can't be true, right? After all the countless shopping weekends with my mum and cousins or my fashion savvy girlfriends, this simply cannot be right. The truth is I've lost my inspiration! Sure, we all "need" another item or two from time to time, but what we really need is to get creative with what we do have. For those of you stuck in the rut of your current wardrobe, check out The Culture of Design's Fashion Mixology posts (I got the term of Fashion Mixology from the lovely ladies of A Beautiful Mess). Here I'm offering you fashion inspiration to recreate your look with your current clothing choices!

While putting this post together, I'm listening to Emile Sandé (scroll to the bottom of this post to play one of my favorite songs of hers - Heaven) and rolling in laughter at some of my facial expressions and poses. Though I love fashion, my modeling skills are hilariously lacking.

The art of layering makes fashion math easy!

This is a great basic: dark denim tucked into gray boots with a gray fur scarf.
Simply throw on your peacoat or leather jacket for the chilly winter air.

You can't go wrong with a slimming black cape topped with a leopard scarf plus camel ankle boots.

I can't tell you how much I love this cape! It's just so chic.

A black skirt with subtle sequins is a must! Pairing it over black tights and ankle boots is great for work. My favorite detail is the gold collar necklace tucked under the collar of the blouse.

Simply grab your blazer and iPad, and you are all set for the workday ahead.

Want to make this work friendly outfit transition into evening? Adding this gray fur scarf and these black velvet toed silver heels gives it the glam it needs for dinner and drinks.

What do you think about these fashion outfit ideas? Do you feel inspired? I hope you do, and please spread the word about The Culture of Design. We don't want to keep all this fashion advice to ourselves. Sharing is caring!

Golden Globes 2012 Fashion: Best Dressed
Though the Golden Globes is an annual event held by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) to honor the best in film and television, I mainly tune in for the killer fashion. This year marked the 70th Golden Globes which called for stunning styles donned by actors, actresses and producers. Scroll down to see a few of my favorites.
I found this amazing photograph of the best dressed from Fashion Magazine's blog. I couldn't agree with their top picks more!

This rich ruby red gown by Zac Posen hints at last season's oxblood trend as covered here and reminisces of the popular open back style as featured here, both by The Culture of Design.
Zuhair Murad did right by Jennifer Lopez, flattering her curves with such elegant lace detailing. The mermaid tail design seemed to be a theme among Hollywood's stars at the Globes.
Julianne Moore looks stunning in this open back dress by Tom  Ford. It's column silhouette in black and white exude elegance.
Kerry Washington is a vision in this feminine and frosted number by Mui Mui, showing just enough skin to be sexy and classy. This is one of my favorite Golden Globes looks.
Kate Hudson in Alexander McQueen is leaving me starstruck. The gold against the black highlights her frame perfectly. Oh how I wish I could borrow this one!
Here are more celebrities in haute couture for this hott Hollywood event!
Trend summary: The main colors of the evening were various shades of red, rich black and classic white. Texture was created with silver, gold, diamond or lace details. The mermaid tail along with leg-peeking slits were popular as well. Be expecting hints of these in future fashion trends!

Who wore your favorite look of the evening? Happy Fashion everyone! xx

Fashion Inspiration: Jessica Chastain

Jessica Chastain, the red carpet's new sensation, shows us that chic outfits aren't reserved for evening outs only. Here she pairs her vintage glam blouse with black skinny jeans, an oxblood drawstring purse, and sassy black leather boots. To complete the look, she layers on elegance with her black tuxedo-esque trench. Look to her for prima outfit ideas like this one....

...And I anticipate more outstanding performances from her like her role as Celia in The Help (for which she won the 2012 Oscar nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role. The Perfect Fall Ensemble: Rust Riding Pants

Rust riding pants paired with a classic winter white blouse is essential this Fall. I especially love this blouse with its gold tip collar. The touch of cheetah print in the heels are bold but not overpowering. The black blazer with its gold adorned shoulders and the black quilted purse beautifully balance the color and textures of this outfit. You can't go wrong with this Fall look. It's a safe risk to make for the fashionably unsure. The Burberry umbrella is the perfect accessory for evening flurries as Christmas approaches. I hope you've enjoyed this Fall 2012 fashion ensemble idea! xxThe Perfect Fall Ensemble: Rust Riding Pants Trend

What I'm Wearing for Fall/Winter 2012/2013

Here while junking at The Shop of Seagate, I'm wearing a fashionable outfit made of Fall's basics layered together. I am wearing a simple denim button down shirt tucked into my winter white lace skirt. My fur vest from last Fall provides the perfect amount of extra warmth in Winter's approaching chill. My outer shell is a cozy camel jacket with an exaggerated hood. It also has a belt (made of the same fabric as the coat) that I find to be a distracting detail to my outfit so I just tie it into a bow in the back. This purse by Pietro Alessandro is one of my faves. It's an icey wintry blue that echoes the color of my denim shirt. What really pulls the outfit together are the camel ankle boots and coffee brown belt, grounding the tones and textures. I hope what I'm wearing for Fall/Winter 2012/2013 inspires you to put your best fashion forward! xx

I am snagging a quick photo while junking and exploring inside.
I'm spotted outside The Shop of Seagate in front of some amazing
window panes and shutters for those on the hunt!
This necklace I purchased from Target in early Summer. It's perfectly chic with its hint of color.
Without my coat, here's a good look at my fur vest over my denim top with its rolled up sleeves.

Here the all-American "it" girl of fashion and style, Blake Lively, is wearing a black pea coat with a skinny dark trouser, charcoal handbag and oxfords. She completes her look with a fun, patterned scarf and bright red iPad cover. This Charleston-born Southern girl is one of my favorite celebrities. Not only is she a trend setter and talented actress, she is classy! She refuses to go nude on screen (click here for the article). Here in Brooklyn she is on set as Serena van der Woodsen of Gossip Girl. Blake Lively plays and works in style -- It's no wonder that she is The Culture of Design's Monday Muse. xx

Model & designer, Kate Moss is one of the leading icons of the fashion industry. If you're a fashionista, you look to her for the latest trends. Here she captures the black & white trend by wearing a Wool Coat with a contrast sleeve, a basic white T and black denim trousers. She is also modeling an army green bodycon dress and black ankle boots, all by Kate Moss for Mango. If I need style inspiration, Kate Moss is one of my go-to girls. Fall into the ranks with Fall's military-inspired fashion trend. Suit up in jackets and trenches that echo the silhouette and structure of the militia. This season, you'll find this style carrying over into jewelry that resembles the medals our U.S. military have earned on the front lines. Combat the cold weather with deconstructed boots, some adorned with laces and gold tips as pictured here. Complete your overall look with a stylish backpack to carry all of your day and night necessities! Wear the modern military-inspired trend with pride; and wear it with honor for all who have fought for our freedom. Freedom will always be in style. xx

Alexa Chung is the Monday Muse this week for her effortless ability to wear absolutely anything especially the hottest hue for Fall - oxblood. Also known as the "new black," oxblood is making appearances on the red carpet by the likes of Rihanna, Blake Lively and many other celebrities. The collage below gives you a more affordable take on the fashionable oxblood trend that Alexa Chung so beautifully models here.

Don't be fooled by the rich tones of this Fall color. It's not burgundy, and it's not maroon. But, it is the new black! This hue is so hot that it's also being seen in home decor! Scroll down to see this fashion frenzy at its finest. How will you adorn yourself in oxblood this Fall season?

Remember the coveted crochet lace skirt that you wore throughout the warm days of Summer? Well, don't put her away just yet! Take your lace skirt into Fall with long sleeved cotton tops or buttoned down blouses. Pile on the layers with a fur vest and a military-esque parka. These pieces will add the necessary edge to the femininity of the crochet lace skirt, balancing the overall feel of this ensemble. Now for your legs - tights and ankle boots will provide the warmth you'll need to combat November and December's chilly temperatures, all in a Fashionable way. For countless options, you can even throw in a leather belt to define the waist or swap out the parka for a classic trench. Below I've shared some pictures of how to transition this beautiful & fashionable item - the crochet lace skirt - into the winter white trend of Fall/Winter 2012/2013. (Haven't gotten the memo on winter white, click here to get in the know!) xx

It's that time again for a favorite faux pas of mine to come back into fashion! Winter white is the blue moon of the fashion world, and this season it is being worn head to toe on the runway. For those of you not too sure how to rock this daring color against the usual dark tones of winter, start light with a scarf (pictured below). As you become more comfortable with the lush hue, step out and try a winter white jacket (also pictured below). This clean shade is a beautiful contrast to stunning black, exuding a timeless Audrey Hepburn feel. You'll be glad you embraced it whether in a scarf, a jacket, a top, trousers or all of the above! Adorn yourself in winter white. Such a classic and rare trend is a must try this Fall/Winter season.

Follow up on Fashion Trends - Animal Prints & Velvet

Touches Seen in Allure Magazine

Allure Magazine has done a page spread on velvet's surging popularity this season in its November issue (Pictured below is Allure's spread on velvet entitled Soft Touch followed by The Culture of Design's blogpost entitled Velvet Revolution). This textile is on the list of Fashion's Most Wanted!

Layering for Fall doesn't have to be complicated or boring. Fashion should always be fun and full of risks! Below I'm wearing a black camisole from Island Passage with a sheer cheetah print tank from Francesca's (remember animal prints are in!), jeggings from Target, Via Spiga brown boots from Nordstrom, an Aztec gold necklace, simple gold square earrings and black onyx ring. This outfit is the blank canvas that allows me to experiment with textures, silhouettes and colors.

Below I've offered two separate options, one being a tan leather-esque jacket by Free People paired with a vibrant neon yellow scarf from Forever 21 (I'm obsessed with this color right now. It's beautiful!). The other option is an adorable magenta sweater by Ya and knit pastel scarf by Free People, both from Island Passage. Colder weather doesn't mean we have to sacrifice fashion for warmth. Just get creative and have fun! If you have any questions, comment here and I'll help you dress yourself fashionably for Fall!

L'automne Fashion

My summer semester in Paris in 2008 opened my eyes to the beauty and sophistication of Parisian fashion. It is to no surprise that Paris boasts the title of Fashion Capital of the World. Because she is teeming with unparalleled creativity, I miss this enchanting city. Have you ever explored the Rues of Paris? If you haven't, you must visit this French destination, or better yet, call Paris home. Below is a taste of Fall French fashion. I hope you enjoy! Got countless cute summer dresses stored away in your closet that you want to wear but are not sure how to? Here's a little guide on making a Summer dress work for Fall and Winter! After all, why retire your favorite piece of Summer when you can enjoy it even into the colder months with a few layering tips!?

This rust side cutout dress is on the top of my Summer favorites list. To make this dress Fall friendly, I threw a navy and white striped crop top over it, a leather-esque carmel jacket by Free People (one of my Fall favorites) and a Dolce Vita ankle boot that I scored at TJ Maxx.
To create another Fall option I wore this rust sweater by Ya and my H&M cheetah print scarf (animal print is the rage this Fall) all over top my dress. I completed this look by slipping on black, shimmery tights (from Forever 21) and high leg black boots by Restricted (from Island Passage). This rust and brown woven scarf coupled with this amazing Navaho inspired coat by BB Dakota (also from Island Passage) formed the ideal Winter collage atop my Via Spiga boots (from Nordstrom). All of you still holding on to your Summer dresses, there are ways to repurpose them for Fall and Winter enjoyment as seen here!
What do you think of these outfits? Which one is your favorite? Do you plan on trying any of these tips on your Summer dresses?

Animal Print accessories are all the rage this Fall in the world of fashion. They've been prowling along the catwalks of Proenza Schouler, Valentino, and Tom Ford (all featured below). Give any outfit an instant 2012 update by adding an animal print handbag, clutch or boot. Don't worry about storing away this fashion hit after Fall 2012. This trend is becoming more of a classic wardrobe staple which means it'll last past this fashion season. Animal print, whether zebra, cheetah or antelope inspired, is evolving from its neutral tones to vibrant colors. Whatever shade you choose, your animal print accessory will roar "fashionista".

Va Va Velvet! Stock your wardrobe with velvet galore to update your look this Fall/Winter 2012-2013 fashion season. Women's Wear Daily has deemed this trend as a Velvet Revolution. And sure enough, velvet is overthrowing the boring textiles of past seasons with its soft texture in various hues like honey gold, merlot, rose smoke and french roast (pictured below). You, fashionable men and women, will find this fashion forward fabric on a slim trouser, a tailored blazer, evening wedges, dazzling purses, elegant gowns, bow ties and more. I'm in love with the velvet collar necklaces that are popping up everywhere. Anyone and everyone can incorporate a little velvet into their fashion life. Just follow the couture designs of Fendi, Chanel and Lanvin (all pictured below). After all, texture is better this Fall/Winter 2012-2013 fashion season!

From Brocades to Velvet, this Baroque style is taking us centuries back to enjoy the luxury and elegance of a royal era fit for the modern day fashion queen. To embrace this romantic trend, pair an embellished brocade dress with velvet heels fit for the Rues of Paris and extravagant earrings mesmerizing to commoners. Although this Fall 2012 fashion trend exudes the budget of the opulent as seen on the catwalks of Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana and Valentino (seen below), it is available to those shy of royal resources by brands like BB Dakota (featured below). For those stepping slowly into the territory of this "Old World" fashion trend, start by finishing off a slim gold trouser with a black velvet top and charming ear candy. The Peplum Rally is in full swing this Fall Fashion Season! Stars like Blake Lively, Kate Middleton, Jennifer Aniston and Michelle Williams are boasting this flirtatious trend on and off the red carpet. In their September issue, Marie Clare India features Lively in one of my favorite versions of this fashionable silhouette - in Antonio Berardi's sequin peplum gown (pictured below). I fell in love at first sight with this fabric waist flower. I give this trend an "absolute yes" for your Fall 2012 wardrobe. Don't miss out on the beloved peplum this season. It's a must-wear. xx

Leather is the new 2012 fashion craze. Seen in a variety of colors, from midnight black to citrus gold to red tangerine, this popular textile first hit the catwalk at Hermes, Brioni, Zac Posen, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Doo.Ri, Derek Lam and Yigal Azrouël (all featured below). It's debuting on some of my favorite celebrities such as Blake Lively and Emma Stone (just scroll down to see). It's sexy. It's sophisticated. It's feminine. I'm challenging you to grab it in a dress, a top, a trouser or a skirt. Leather is your new 2012 fashion endeavor!

Thankfully today's designers are being more gracious to us with their tasteful use of leather (the 2012 fashion craze) than the jackets seen in this hilarious Saturday Night Live skit featuring Will Ferrell and Christopher Walken (you've got to watch this; it's one of my faves)...

The transition from Summer to Fall is hard. Trust me, I get it. Letting go of all those fun colored, flirty dresses and adorable height enhancing wedges is no easy task. But for those of you mourning the fading warm September days, there is hope! A Summer fashion trend that I personally adore will not be leaving us. Yes, I'm talking about the sexy but classy open back dress. This look is going to carry over even into the cooler Fall nights so don't fret just yet.

And for those of you who prefer not to show a lot of skin, the open back dress is your perfect match. Its typical silhouette boasts a higher neckline in the front with a hemline that touches just above the knee or graces the floor, exuding the elegance of a lady. Its slightly revealing back has a sexy but tasteful wow-factor sure to impress onlooking fashionistas (just check out Heidi Klum pictured below)! Go ahead and try an open back dress for the first time. You'll fall in love at first fitting!

The Bomber Jacket is a must-have this season as seen in Fall 2012 fashion week. Thakoon, Chloe, Burberry and many other high-end designers are offering their own version of this outfit essential. You'll find fur, lamb's wool and many other touches to make this trending design capture your personality. Pair it with a polished trouser, a flirty pencil skirt or an eclectic dress to instantly update your look!

Here I am wearing an adorable Bomber Jacket by Jack of BB Dakota
